Learning Support

Coffs Harbour Education Campus (CHEC) is a partnership between the NSW Department of Education, TAFE NSW and Southern Cross University and provides a unique learning environment for senior high school, TAFE and university students in Coffs Harbour. As a shared facility, students are provided with a range of study and learning opportunities in a unique learning environment.

With campus-wide Wi-Fi, a restaurant and catering kitchens, university standard library, café, gymnasium, art studio, technology workshop, 500 seat theatre, drama theatre, music and dance studios it is difficult to find a better place to study.

Although CHEC is a large campus, it is easy to find your way around. There are plenty of maps and signage available around the campus and the room numbers will tell you where you need to be. Of course, if you are feeling a little lost, don’t hesitate to ask someone for help – they are always happy to point you in the right direction.

Dedicated to HSC

Students of the College receive the benefit of attending a school that is dedicated to helping them achieve their best possible result in the HSC. Our teachers are able to focus on the needs of senior students, without the distractions of junior students. We provide a supportive learning environment, with additional resources and study support to help students achieve their best.

You can also read the Higher School Certificate Rules & Procedures on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Website for more information about the HSC.

Individualised support

Each student is allocated a mentor who is one of their teachers. The mentor role is one of individualised support to help students transition into the college and review their academic progress and welfare while at the college. Additionally, there is a Learning Support Team who work with students and their families to develop personalised learning support plans for students with special needs. There is a counselling unit and Student Learning Centre. There is a Careers Advisor, two Counsellors, a Student Support Officer and Learning and Support Teachers who are focused on providing support for students.

Sporting and extra-curricular opportunities

Each year the college runs a large number of excursions covering all subjects. There are over 50 sporting activities and competitions on offer throughout each year. In addition to whole school activities within the Mentor Program, a Ski Trip and Heron Island Week, the College provides a substantial creative and performing arts unit which hosts regular showcase events for art, music, dance and drama. Our vast range of extra-curricular activities ensures that there is a wide variety of choice for every student.

Café and restaurant

Students of the College are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what to have for lunch.

The Campus Café offers students a variety of hot drinks, hot food, salads, sandwiches and snacks to see our students through the day. The Café is also a great meeting place for students, either inside at the tables provided or in the Gathering Space outside.

The Osprey Restaurant is a fully functioning restaurant and conference centre. It not only enables the college students to apply kitchen and service skills acquired through the Hospitality courses but also provides a venue for other college functions.

The “Hole in the Wall” sells discounted food and drinks from TAFE and CHSC Hospitality students.

Technology access and bring your own device

All students who attend Coffs Harbour Senior College have access to an extensive range of ‘university standard’ technology support, services and equipment. Students are asked to bring their own device (BYOD) or laptop to connect to the campus-wide wireless networks or they may access a range of computing labs and types in the Library, Student Learning Centre and labs that are not in use by a class at the time required (check the timetable on the door).

In classes taking place outside of a computer lab where the class activity requires computer or Internet access the class will have access to laptops stored in secure charging trolleys so that no student is disadvantaged in accessing useful technologies. Laptops and other specialist technology equipment can also be borrowed from the SLC on short term loans.

Bus services

Students enrolled at Coffs Harbour Senior College are eligible for subsidised bus travel to and from the college. You can apply online at www.service.nsw.gov.au

Teaching periods are generally between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday. Parents and students should take this into consideration when applying for enrolment. Bus service providers may not conform to these times for certain routes so alternative travel arrangements may need to be organised. If your child is affected by an early pick up it is expected that they will liaise with their teachers to complete any missed class work.

Parents should contact their local bus company to find out pick up and drop off times applicable to their area. A full list of bus service providers can be downloaded below.
