About CHSC

About the college

Coffs Harbour Senior College is a unique learning environment providing a specialist HSC experience for students. Centrally located in Coffs Harbour, we share the Coffs Harbour Education Campus with TAFE NSW and Southern Cross University.

College Leadership

The college leadership team is made up of the college Principal Sam Hutton, our Deputy Principal David Bateman and the Head Teachers of each faculty. Teachers support the academic and wellbeing programs of the college. They work closely with all staff to ensure these run smoothly. We also have a very active student voice through our Student Representative Council.

Frequently asked questions - FAQ

The campus allows us to provide excellent facilities to students, cooperation and sharing of knowledge between staff of the different organisations, collaboration opportunities and a mature, adult learning environment.

Below, you can find responses to some of the common questions about the unique nature of CHSC. Specific information for students can be found in the Student Handbook in the Current Students section of this website.

Normal classes are conducted in a typical classroom setting, working with a teacher in a cooperative, non-disrupted environment. Class sizes are a maximum of 24 or smaller for specialist subjects.

Special lectures are sometimes scheduled to provide additional assistance, introduce special guest speakers and provide extension work in some subjects.

Each student is allocated one of their teachers as a mentor when they start at the college. The Teacher Mentor is the first person to contact for any assistance. They will be able to guide you to the most appropriate support person such as a Head Teacher, Learning Support Coordinator, Careers Advisor or Counsellor.

The college offers nearly all NESA approved subjects. See the curriculum handbook under the enrolment tab for more information.

The college has an expectation of 100% attendance at all classes and scheduled official events. Rolls are marked each session and teachers contact caregivers if students begin to miss lessons. Attendance rates are above regional and state rates.

Ongoing student surveys indicate the session length is one of the most popular features of the college – students usually have a break on the hour and teachers typically use a variety of teaching and learning methods in any session.

When students and staff are not on class, the two hours provides a great opportunity for tutoring, student assistance and mentoring activities.

Each student is treated as an individual and a program of study and support is tailored to their needs. The Learning Support Team helps students to do this.

College core hours are from 9am to 4pm. Some days have sessions running until 6pm. Students on early buses leave according to the school bus timetable. Most buses leave at around 4pm and there is little disruption to classes.

The majority of students receive an ATAR. It is the student’s choice as to whether they wish to receive one or not. Students have achieved ATARs in the past that are in the top band in the state, e.g. 99.95.
